Mountain West and Uber Drivers

Uber Driver

UBER transportation has come to Montana and Wyoming and is growing. What exactly is Uber? For riders, Uber is a convenient, inexpensive and safe taxi service. People can hire a private driver to pick them up & take them to their destination with the tap of a button on a phone. The nearest driver is often at the pickup location within minutes. Not only is this an on-demand car service, but you can even watch as your driver is en-route to come pick you up. For drivers, Uber provides pay and allows you to be your own boss/set your own hours. Take on fares whenever you wish (work as much or as little as you desire) while meeting new people in your area from all walks of life.

Many interested Uber drivers wonder what that means for their auto insurance. Mountain West Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company classifies Uber as a local transportation networking company (TNC). As such, here are a few things to keep in mind for your auto coverage:

Can my vehicle still be covered by my auto insurance policy?

Response: It is ok to add vehicles used by Uber drivers to a standard auto policy; however, it is important to remember the following:

  • Livery is excluded by policy definition (Livery insurance is commercial insurance that covers for-hire services, such as limos, taxis, Uber, etc.)
  • Once the Uber driver logs into his/her Uber App, the standard auto policy would not provide coverage.
    • This exclusion applies whether or not a passenger is occupying the vehicle.
  • Uber Drivers automatically receive $1 million of Commercial Liability coverage through Uber when they sign up as a driver.
    • Uber coverage provides Commercial Liability, Uninsured and Underinsured coverage, as well as Comp and Collision (providing the driver carries full coverage on the vehicle on their personal auto coverage).
  • TNC vehicles cannot be added to a Mountain West Commercial policy.

Additional Information: This Livery Exclusion applies to all Transportation Network Companies (UBER, Lyft, etc.).

If becoming an Uber driver is something you are interested in, be sure to set-up an auto policy review with your local Farm Bureau agent. Happy driving while earning!
