During these cold winter months, you might be planning a tropical vacation or a trip to take a break from your regular routine. If you are planning to leave, make sure that you plan ahead and take necessary precautions to protect your house from break-ins.
Consider Hiring a House Sitter
The most reliable way to protect your home is to hire someone that you trust to live there while you are gone. If you have a friend or relative who is willing to help, this is an easy way to prevent break-ins.
The goal is to try and make it look as if someone is home, so that burglars don’t target your house. Hold your mail while on vacation, or have your neighbor pick it up daily. You can request the post office to hold your mail by calling your local office, or even online through the USPS.
You should do the same thing with your newspaper delivery, so that newspapers don’t pile up on the end of your driveway. You can also have a friend or neighbor check your house periodically for random fliers or door hangers that might have been left.
It’s probably a good investment to purchase light timers for your house. To make your home look occupied, lights need to come on and off just as they would in a normal day. Light timers will automatically turn lights on and off to create the illusion that people are living in your home.
Invite your neighbors to park in your driveway while you are gone. You want to create as much daily activity as you can around your home. Any other regular activities that they can help with, such as taking your trash to the end of the driveway. Try and think of all the activities you would do if you were home.
This may seem obvious, but make sure you lock all windows and doors in your home. Take the extra time to double check! You want to make it as difficult as possible for burglars to break in.
Don’t Broadcast your Vacation
Take some precaution when discussing your upcoming trip. For example, your blog or social media probably aren’t the best place to announce your absence. When in public, or even at work, be careful who is nearby when you talk about your vacation. Advise your children to be careful as well. You don’t need to be suspicious of everyone you meet, but you never know who is listening. The less information you put out there, you will decrease the likelihood of being burglarized.
Home Security Systems
Installing a home security system is a good way to add extra protection to your residence. The great thing about these systems is that they are running while you are home or away.
There are several smart phone apps created for home security. Many of them connect to inexpensive home cameras so that you can keep on eye on things while you are gone. See a list of top home security apps here.
