The 4th of July and grilling go hand-in-hand. No need to mess with a time-honored tradition! Break out the grill and throw on some burgers and hot dogs, but don’t be afraid to get creative. Grill up some corn or eggplant or put together some colorful vegetable skewers to serve to your guests with their meat.
For sides, go the traditional route with baked beans, pasta salad and deviled eggs; or mix it up with a build-your-own baked potato bar. Make sure to have a variety of chips available, and serve up some homemade guac or french onion dip for a delicious alternative to the store-bought variety.
When it comes to dessert, nothing is more American than apple pie! Serve some up with vanilla ice cream or think outside the box with an alternative to a full pie, like these apple pie bites. Another creative dessert idea is to set up a S’mores bar. Set some wooden skewers, graham crackers, chocolate bars and marshmallows next to the grill or fire pit so your guests can put together the famous summer treat themselves. Encourage people to mix it up by also offering Oreos, peanut butter cups, strawberry marshmallows and caramel squares for unique S’more creations.
You’ll need cold drinks for your Independence Day bash, and while soda, iced tea, lemonade and beer are fine, why not offer your guests a special patriotic concoction? Country Living offers several recipes, including Red White and Blue Frozen Sangria, a Blueberry-Strawberry Mojito, and an All-American Daiquiri. For the kiddies, whip up a bowl of non-alcoholic Patriotic Punch–complete with a Twizzler straw!
Three words: Red, White, Blue. These are the three major ingredients you need when picking out decorations for your 4th of July bash. You can purchase star-spangled streamers, balloons, plates, cups, napkins, lights and party favors at your local supermarket, party or dollar store. Don’t forget to buy a few patriotic accessories for your guests to take pictures in; like Uncle Sam hats, Statue of Liberty crowns, American-flag shades, and red white and blue leis. You can even set up a make-shift photo booth with a stars and stripes backdrop where guests can snap their patriotic portraits!
Make your Fourth of July party one to remember with special themed games! Reader’s Digest compiled a list of crowd-pleasing patriotic games, including Red White and Blue Tag, Patriotic Balloon Pop, Fourth of July Bingo and Pin the Hat on Uncle Sam. Many of these games don’t require anything other than a group of fun-loving people!
To throw the best 4th of July party, you need the perfect patriotic playlist. Music-streaming apps like Pandora and Spotify have compiled playlists containing our favorite Americana anthems, including “Sweet Home Alabama” by Lynyrd Skynyrd, “Born in the USA” by Bruce Springsteen, “American Girl” by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, and “Party in the USA” by Miley Cyrus. You can stream one of these pre-made playlists or customize your own to keep the party bumpin’! Just make sure you are prepared with a way to play the music, whether it be via a fancy speaker system or a portable Bluetooth speaker.
Hmm…what else makes a great 4th of July party? Oh, yeah: fireworks! Everyone loves fireworks on the Fourth, but it’s important to use them safely. You should always make sure the kind of fireworks you’re planning on using are legal in your area before shooting them off. Make sure children are supervised by adults to avoid accidents, don’t drink and firework, and make sure to follow the instructions on the labels to ensure you’re using each firework properly. Check out our previous post for more firework safety tips.
We hope you enjoyed reading and will use some of these ideas for this year’s 4th of July party! Have fun, and stay safe!
