Flu season got you down? With only five weeks of winter left, there are steps you can take to help prevent a cold or flu and ward off illness. Read on for more.
Take Preventative Measures
Avoid close contact. Avoid close contact with people who are sick. If you're sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick too.
Stay home when sick. If possible, stay home from work, school and errands when sick. This helps prevent spreading the germs!
Cover your mouth and nose. Please, cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing. Please.
Wash your hands. Wash your hands or use Germ-X in order to prevent spreading the illness.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Prevent the spreading of germs by not touching your eyes, nose or mouth and then touching other things.
Practice other good health habits. Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces, especially when someone is ill. Get plenty of sleep, stay active, manage stress, drink plenty of water and eat nutritious food.
Stay home and get plenty of rest. Mind your flu manners and stay home. You're sick - and very contagious!
Drink plenty of liquids. Drink plenty of fluids such as water, fruit juices, sports drinks and broth-based soups. They keep your respiratory system hydrated.
Treat aches and fevers. You might have a fever because your body has turned up the heat to fight off the flu. Treat it and the aches with medication.
Take care of your cough. Got a cough? Try an expectorant, which turns mucus into liquid so you can cough it up.
Sit in a steamy bathroom. Try sitting in a bathroom and letting the shower run hot.
Run the humidifier. A humidifier or vaporizer can moisten the air and help ease congestion and coughs. However, don't use a warm mist as that can promote the growth of bacteria.
Try a lozenge. Lozenges can help moisten and coat a scratchy throat. It may quiet your cough too!
Get salty. Saline nose drops or sprays are great for clearing your nose! Try it out.
