Riverton, WY

Located in the center of the state, Riverton is a city in Fremont County with a population of more than 10,000! The city was founded in 1906 on land ceded from the Wind River Indian Reservation, and was named Riverton for its location on the confluence of the Big and Little Wind rivers. It was this ideal location that made the town a popular gathering point for humans throughout history. Today, Riverton is nicknamed "The Rendezvous City," as rendezvous is a French word meaning "a place appointed for meeting."

Today, the city is home to many local businesses, restaurants and even a community college. Residents of Riverton love to partake in all sorts of fun activities and events year-round: there is truly something for everyone! This was particularly true on August 21, 2017 - the date of the total solar eclipse. The totality zone of the eclipse passed directly over Riverton, making it a hugely popular destination for tourists from around the world. And it's no wonder they wanted to visit this gorgeous city! Don't miss out on your chance to see all that Riverton offers; pay a visit soon.

Unique Attractions

Boysen Reservoir

Just a 40 minute drive along US-26, Boysen Reservoir is a popular summer destination. There is so much to do here, including camping, fishing, boating and swimming. The reservoir is well-known as one of the best walleye and trout fisheries in Wyoming! If that doesn't entice you, the water sports will. The water is warm enough for water sports of all kinds during most of the season: water skiing is especially popular here. If you just want to relax, check out the easily accessible swimming beach on the east shore! It's a great spot to cool off in the water and sunbathe on the sand.

Wind River Hotel & Casino

The Wind River Hotel & Casino is the largest casino in Wyoming, with the biggest collection of Vegas-style games. Located on the Wind River Indian Reservation just two miles south of Riverton, it's the largest of the Reservation's four casinos. The Wind River Hotel & Casino is run by the Northern Arapaho tribe, with the building filled with homages to the Arapho peoples' culture. There is even a Northern Arapaho Experience Culture Room on site, where visitors can see a cultural treasure of Arapaho artifacts and artwork. In the summertime, you can even catch a Northern Arapaho song and dance demonstration here!

Festivals & Events

1838 Mountain Man Rendezvous

The 1838 Mountain Man Rendezvous is held in Riverton during July of every year, and is the only reenactment on the actual untouched, historic site where the original 1838 Rendezvous took place! The original 1838 rendezvous was held by a fur trading company at which trappers and mountain men sold their furs and hides. Reenacted every year, this event features Native American dancing, black powder shooting, hawk 'n knife competitions and seminars focused on the fur-trapping era. Make sure to check out "Traders Row" for a chance to bargain for a souvenir!

Riverton Rendezvous

Centered around the history and culture of Riverton and the surrounding areas, the Riverton Rendezvous is truly an action-packed weekend. Hosted every third weekend in July, the event kicks off with the Rocky Mountain Car & Bike Friday Night Cruise: a parade of old and new vehicles drive down the streets of Riverton. On Saturday, the famous Rendezvous Balloon Rally takes flight in the early morning, followed by tethered hot air balloon rides and the Rocky Mountain Car & Bike Show. In the evening, a "Balloon Glow" takes place, where spectators can admire illuminated hot air balloons, which are filled with just enough hot air to get them to fill but not rise. And to top it all off, there's a fireworks show! There's so much to do during this fun-filled weekend, you surely don't want to miss it!

Top Restaurants

The Depot

Housed in the original location of the early 1900s train depot, The Depot is a Mexican restaurant in downtown Riverton. With a fusion of Mexican and train depot theme, this restaurant is a unique experience! If that doesn't entice you to pay The Depot a visit, the food certainly will. They serve up delicious enchiladas, quesadillas, tacos, burritos and other Mexican favorites. Our personal favorite is the chicken chimichanga (with extra sour cream of course). Also, be sure to try their margaritas; they're out-of-this-world!

Roasted Bean and Cuisine

The Roasted Bean and Cuisine, known to locals as "The Bean," is a newer staple in Riverton. Founded in 2014, the owners sought to bring a new kind of experience to the city. Here you'll find quality food and drinks made with only the freshest ingredients. With everything from rib-eye and burgers to salmon basil cream fettuccine and soup, their menu has something for everyone to enjoy. A popular dish is the turkey bacon pesto panini - just in case you're looking for some inspiration! Check out The Bean the next time you're in town!
